After General Bipin Rawat’s death in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8, 2021, the Centre has nominated Lt General Anil Chauhan as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The ministry of defence announced that the retired Lt General would also serve as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs.

As Army Chief, Chauhan retired in May 2021, and Rawat took over as CDS the day after his retirement. Chauhan is the first retired officer in the country’s military to serve as its most senior officer.

Who is Lt General Anil Chauhan?

Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan was born in 1961 and attended the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.

A major general in the Indian Army, Anil Chauhan commanding an Infantry Division in the critical Baramula sector of the Northern Command as a Lieutenant General in the North East Command, was commissioned in 1981.

His contribution to national security and strategic matters continued after he retired from the Army. The Param Vishisht Seva Medal, the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Sena Medal, and the Vishisht Seva Medal were awarded to Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) for his distinguished and illustrious service in the Army.

Lt General Anil Chauhan Major Operations

A Major General with the Northern Command, he commanded an Infantry Division in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla sector. He later commanded a corps in the North East as a Lieutenant General, and from September 2019 until his retirement, he served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command.

At the time of the Balakot strike in 2019, he served as Director General of Military Operations.
